About Fannie Mae

Fannie Mae is a government-sponsored enterprise, chartered by Congress.  Fannie Mae was created in 1938 as a federal agency, and in 1968 they were chartered by Congress as a private shareholder owned company.  Fannie Mae’s sole mission is to provide liquidity and stability to the housing and mortgage industry within the United States.

Fannie Mae has three (3) primary concerns: Single Family Homes, Housing and Community Development, and Capital Markets.  These 3 primary objectives help bond and produce a larger amount of funds available in the United States to make home ownership and renting more available and affordable.

Fannie Mae has operations in the secondary mortgage markets as well.  This means that they do not loan mortgage funds directly, but ultimately through partnerships with mortgage bankers or brokers.  This helps ensure funds are available for lending to buyers and that they are affordable for the borrower.
